Default This may sound like an odd question, but....

....Why is everyone obsessed with saying "lol?" It just seems so odd..if you just click on a random thread, and go to a random post, there's a 99.9999999% chance the "word" "lol" will be in there somewhere. Unless, of course, I'm the one who made the post . But still, it just doesn't seem right...I mean, I know it stands for "laugh out loud," (although I often pretend I don't know that just to annoy people ) but people use it when there's nothing to laugh about. Can someone please explain this whole "lol" concept to me?

People just do it because it is there for them to use and do what Jaime said too. Lol.

Well, lol give or take is not really the full defanition your using. yes lol stands for laugh out loud, but its just used to fill in ackward spots, or erm...You know, explain that you find something cocky, funny, or just plain random, but just is not enough to make you laugh. Thats where lol comes in.
    Ex:

    lol, how did you know?

    lol, really?

    BOOM BOX FTW!!! lol

As if you would only grin.
I once said lol for no reason at all...
I was in a thread which topic was showing off cute animals found online. I put up a pic and said "I actually typed Super cute kitty cat in the serch box. lol "

Kind of like that. And IF you laugh, you will use "Rofl" instead of "lol".

I agree with Jaime, at times it is just used to fill in the gaps of a conversation. I also agree with Ella about how it is used if something is just slightly funny.

Well, it may only work for me, but I use it in cases where I feel I might sound a bit too serious. It somewhat helps to lighten the mood lol.
In other cases, I tend to use it as an occasional replacement for words that represent laughter, amusement, etc. such as "hah", or "heh". Like a lot of English words, its purpose can't really be narrowed down to a phrase as simple as "laugh out loud".
Status: Quit FR since I never liked FR at all. Will probably not post anymore.

I use it how RP uses it, to lighten the mood. I also use it when I have nothing else to say. Sometimes I also say "haha" or "xD".

Well, I couldn't have said it better than Ella, but here is my definition:
lol stands for 'Laugh Out Loud', but most people don't use it for saying that. It's used to replace 'Haha' or "Hehe" and used when someone tells a joke or says something funny that might not exactly come out as a joke. Ex:
    Chatdy's ears are weird.
Sounds more like an insult than:
    Chatdy's ears are weird... lol
(I just used it as an example, but they are weird, aren't they? XD)
I use XD as much as lol, maybe even more. Both are meant to express jokes and funny things.
    Did this help? lol
    Allons-y.
