Icon1 A Guide to Pets in Free Realms

I've been collecting some information about pets, and thought I'd share it here so anyone who's just starting out in Free Realms can learn how pets work. I know I was pretty confused at first! I have some more pictures and other things to add later, but this is a good start. I would also appreciate help, suggestions, and pictures from everybody else!

First, why would you want to have a pet?

So, now you're sold - how do you get a pet?

    • Pets can be purchased wherever you are in the game simply by going to the Station Cash marketplace by clicking the gold SC at the bottom of the screen.
    • Pets are not available for purchase with in-game coins.
    • There are currently 20 cats and 27 dogs available for purchase with Station Cash. There is also an exclusive black lab that you get with a code when you purchase the real-world starter trading card set from a store for $9.99. Update: There are also TC prize pug and tiger cat pets available from both RW booster and online booster packs. Thanks WendyNobleCharmer!
    • Four of the cats and three of the dogs are only available for members to purchase.
    • Each pet can be seen at one of 7 Pet Adoption Centers (see map in Appendix A below).
    • You can try out pets before you buy by visiting them at an adoption center, but only members can try out member-only pets.
    • You can try a pet for 20 minutes, and then you have to wait 2 hours before trying another one (Thanks RedBear for the confirmation on the times!)
    • Cats are either Friendly, Lazy, or Nervous.
    • Dogs are either Friendly, Lazy, or Excited.
    • Friendly cats and dogs tend to frequently spout lots of hearts above their heads.
    • Lazy cats and dogs lay down to lounge around whenever possible.
    • Nervous cats are jumpy and more prone to arched backs.
    • Excited dogs are bouncy and prone to tail-chasing.

There are large dogs and small dogs with various variations, and long-haired cats and short-haired cats with different color patterns. The four pets available in Blackspore are all ghost pets - worth checking out for sure, although be aware they are only available for members to purchase. Here are composites of the Station Cash Marketplace pictures of all the pets:

    Cats:

    Dogs:

Here's a text list of the cats with their personality types, cost in Station Cash, and location. Member-only pets are noted. Also, please note that 2 of the member-only pets have conflicting personalities not sure which is correct (Update - the two cats' personality conflicts have been resolved. Thanks RedBear!). Update: I'm adding information as I get it about whether a pet is male or female - as far as I know, this is set for each type of pet and cannot be changed. I would love info from other pet owners about what model pet you have and whether it's male or female! Thanks for all your help on this, RedBear!

So now you've picked out your pet and purchased it. What next?

    • Name your pet. See Appendix B below for available names.
    • You can start the Pet Trainer job. You can actually start before you adopt a pet by borrowing from various trainers and trying out pets, but if you do plan to get a pet, it's best to go ahead because then your pet can start learning too.
    • To level up in the Pet Trainer job, you'll pretty much be teaching your pet different tricks. As you try each trick more times, your pet will get better at the trick too.
    • When you start the Pet Trainer job with a trainer, you will get a tutorial on pets in general. I started with Zachery at Stillwater Crossing; I suspect you could begin with any of the pet trainers, but I'm not sure.
    • You'll need to get a bowl and a brush and some food and shampoo, because you will need to feed and clean your pet when its hunger and cleanliness levels get low. You can get these supplies for coins in-game from sellers at each adoption center (except Blackspore).
    • The bowl and the brush are one-time purchases, and can be shared if you have multiple pets. Food and shampoo are consumables.
    • You can feed your pet special vitamins and use special conditioners when you clean them for cool temporary effects. (But you don't have to use these every time you feed or clean if you want to save some money.)
    • You can buy lots of cool pet outfits with Station Cash, and can also purchase fancy sweaters for coins from two sellers in-game. You'll also get some sweaters and other accessories as you go through Pet Trainer quests.

Neoanne409 has already put together a great guide to available pet supplies and which seller to buy them from , so I won't repeat that information. You can find it here (Pet Supplies (Guide)). Pet supply sellers are marked on the map in Appendix A below. I will mention the standard costs in coins for each type of item:

    • Basic food - 15
    • Super food - 30
    • Vitamins - 90
    • Basic shampoo - 15
    • Super shampoo - 30
    • Conditioners - 90
    • Bowls - 150
    • Brushes - 150

Collars can also be purchased for coins at sellers near the Pet Supplies sellers at each adoption center except Blackspore. Each collar seller has red, blue, black and pink collars for both dogs and cats, all for 270.

There are two in-game pet sweater sellers, Linnie in Snowhill and Finnie in Sanctuary. Their locations are marked on the map. (update - I missed one; there are three sweater sellers! Winnie in Seaside has been added below. Thanks, NeoAnne!)

Snowhill: Linnie - Fancy Pet Sweaters
    All cost 270 coins

    • Kitty Argyle Pink Sweater
    • Doggy Single Stripe Sweater
    • Doggy Sporty Stripe Sweater
    • Kitty Light Plaid Sweater
    • Doggy Country Club Sweater
    • Kitty Tri-Tone Sweater
    • Doggy Light Plaid Sweater
    • Kitty Single Stripe Sweater
    • Doggy Argyle Gold Sweater
    • Kitty Argyle Gold Sweater

Sanctuary: Finnie - Fancy Pet Sweaters
    All cost 270 coins

    • Kitty Dark Plaid Sweater
    • Doggy Triple Stripe Sweater
    • Doggy Highland Sweater
    • Kitty Sporty Stripe Sweater
    • Kitty Argyle Gold Sweater
    • Doggy Tri-Tone Sweater
    • Doggy Argyle Pink Sweater
    • Doggy Horizon Sweater
    • Kitty Country Club Sweater
    • Kitty Triple Stripe Sweater

Seaside: Winnie - Fancy Pet Sweaters (not on my map yet - located up the hill to the left of the Seaside pet adoption center)
    All cost 270 coins

    • Doggy Single Stripe Sweater
    • Doggy Sporty Stripe Sweater
    • Doggy Dark Plaid Sweater
    • Kitty Highland Sweater
    • Kitty Horizon Sweater
    • Doggy Highland Sweater
    • Kitty Light Plaid Sweater
    • Doggy Argyle Gold Sweater
    • Kitty Argyle Pink Sweater
    • Kitty Country Club Sweater

So, that's mostly it for now, except for a few other random things:

    • Feed your pet before you clean it - it will get dirtier when it eats.
    • You can only have one active pet at a time.
    • You can buy multiple pets (not sure if there's a limit).
    • You can't buy more than one of the same pet model (i.e. you can't have two Nox-type dogs).
    • Your pet will occasionally need to answer the call of nature (especially near fire hydrants). Fortunately the evidence of both types disappears on its own, with no need for scooping or mopping up.

Appendix A - Map of Pet Stuff Locations
All pet adoption centers and sellers of pet stuff are marked with arrows in this composite map.

    Appendix B - Pet names

You can choose from a list of names for your pet. You can choose a two-part name, or just choose a name from the second list and leave the first part blank. You can also keep the name your pet came with, but you can't go back to that once you change to something else. You can change your pet's name to anything else on the list at any time. Update: on the 6/5/09 update to Free Realms, they added a bunch more pet names, now reflected in the list below. No, the black lab can only be gotten from the RW starter packs sold in stores. They are 9.99 and include 40 cards a play mat and a prize card for a free black lab, 1 month membership, card collector t shirt, and health potion.

There are also TC prize pug and tiger cat pets available from both RW booster and online booster packs.

This is a great guide, July!

Thomas Edison's last words were 'It's very beautiful over there'.
I don't know where there is, but I believe it's somewhere, and I hope it's beautiful.

Great guide! I'm glad you finally got it up, its very helpful.

Also, I think there is a Fancy Pet Sweater seller in Seaside, but I'll have to check again to be sure.
