    Icon4 Awesome Paint Splatter Tutorial

    TUTORIAL: AWESOME PAINT SPLATTER PHOTOMANIPULATION
This tutorial is best for people with some experience with Photoshop or GIMP, but if you need help feel free to post :)

What you will need to download:
    Brushes: Photoshop / GIMP
(If you don't know how to install brushes, here's a tutorial for Photoshop and for GIMP.)
Texture: Find one you like here.

    Images: Before and After.

    STEP1:
Right-click your layer and select “Duplicate Layer”.

Photoshop: Use the Pen Tool, Background Eraser, or Quick Selection tool to cut your image from its background, whichever floats your boat ^^

Gimp: Use the Pen Tool or Eraser tool, or whatever you like!

If you’re not sure how to do this, then Google “how to cut out an image” ;)

I used the Background Eraser on my image as the bg is simpler.

Your image should look something like this when you are done.

    STEP2:
Create a new layer under the layer you previously worked on and fill it with black. This will be your background.

    J1HXD.png
Your layers palette should look something like this :)

    STEP3:
If you’re using Photoshop, go to Image > Adjustments > Curves. In GIMP go to Colors > Curves.
Make an “S-Curve” to boost contrast.

    7Jaqv.png
    An S-Curve.

Your image should now look more contrast-y ;)

    lPuJr.png
    Contrast-eyyyyy.

    STEP4:
Now create a new layer behind your person and in front of your black background.
Find the brushes you previously downloaded.
Choose a good-sized brush, shrink it down to a reasonable size, and “stamp” it onto your layer, behind your person.

    ry3IO.png
    Example.

If it isn’t big enough for all edges of the person, which in this case it is, choose another brush, size it down, and stamp it in a good spot.
Keep doing this, alternating brushes until you’re satisfied.

It should look something like this.

    STEP5:
Fun part. Click your paint splatter layer and at the top of your layers palette there should be a mini-checkerboard icon. Click it.

    UkQC5.png

Now find the eyedropper tool and zoom in. For this image I’ll start at the bottom-left hand corner. Using the eyedropper tool, click on a color on the edge of your person.

    TTena.png

Make sure to select a color that is closest to the color of most of the other edge pixels in that area. Make sure it’s your foreground color.
Using a reasonable sized brush, paint over the paint splatters that match up to the color of your paint. If the color of the paint splatters start to differ from the edge you have reached then select another color. Repeat this step, using the eyedropper to select different colors and painting over the paint splatter layer until the whole layer is filled in.

If you didn’t get a word of that, then look at this picture.

    STEP6:
Open up the texture you previously downloaded in PS or GIMP, Select > All, CTRL-C, switch to your image, CTRL-V. If you are using GIMP, you have to press the new layer button. Change the blending mode to Overlay, and resize and move the texture as needed. And you’re finished, yay ;D

    STEP6: (OPTIONAL):
This is optional as sometimes it might look better if you skip this step :)
Create a circular selection covering most of your image. Select > Inverse. In Photoshop, go to Select > Modify > Feather. In GIMP go to Select > Feather . Choose a reasonable number (I used 20), hit OK, and go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur. Set the radius to 1.5 and hit OK. This will create a blurred area around your image to give it that final touch ^^

    BEFORE AND AFTER:
    V8G7e.pngIQWT7.png

Yay, you’re finished! Now you can wave it around in front of me yelling “I’M BETTER THAN YOU.”
    Because you are.
    ;)
Thanks for reading and if you finished this tutorial please make sure to post your result :D

Well...this didn't work at all for me..... D:

I couldn't go any further at the "cut out image part"
I looked up what you said, followed the directions..but whatever i do it always cuts out my fr character not the background.

Try inverting the selection by going to Select > Invert ^^ It should be fine.
